Chapter 6: Operations and Uses of Ratios, Proportions, & Percents

This chapter has everything you need to know about ratios, proportions, and percents! You will start out learning what ratios, rates, and proportions are and the operations and word problems involving them. From there, you will study how to solve proportions involving variables and then use these proportion solving skills in your travels through similar figures and scale factors. The second half of the chapter is devoted to mastering percents. From the foundations of converting between fractions, percents, and decimals to finding percents, the part, or the whole, through to calculating percent of change, you will leave this chapter knowing percents and how to use them in any way you could possibly need them in Pre-Algebra and beyond! What are you waiting for?! Strengthen your skills and get started!!

  • 5 star review  Matt has helped my son immensely in preparing both for the SATs and the AP Calculus BC exam. He has a way of explaining and teaching math that kept my son excited and energized to learn more. My son did extremely well on his SATs and was strong in Calculus, all thanks to Matt and his care for his students. If you are need for math help for your child, look no further!

5 star review  Matt Groden is a truly innovative Math Teacher. He makes the word of mathematics real, exciting, and meaningful. When a student becomes excited about mathematics, it makes learning almost second nature. I expect nothing but good things to come from the Groden Math Academy. His students will be the fortunate ones.

  • positive review  Love. :) My daughter took Matt’s AP Calc prep class, and my son watched the algebra prep videos. Both loved, especially my daughter who now wants to sign up for every class Matt offers. Thank you for approaching teaching in such a fun and engaging way!! So highly recommend. :)

5 star review  Both of our sons were extremely fortunate to have Mr. Groden for AP Calculus. He is enthusiastic, clear and an all-around outstanding teacher. He motivates his students and consistently shows great interest in their well being, both in and out of the classroom. Both our sons were extremely well prepared for the AP exam. Thank you!

  • 5 star review  Mr Groden has the ability to make calculus (and math in general) fun, meaningful, relevant, etc. and to relate complex concepts in a way that not only makes sense, but also gives the students the ability to re-apply the concepts later on. Our son had Mr. Groden as his calculus teacher in high school, and our daughter has now used Mr. Groden's services for both SAT prep and AB Calculus weekly review. Both have been excellent and more than worth the money spent.

5 star review  If you are looking for an enthusiastic teacher who makes understanding math easy then look no further. Matt came to our rescue when my daughter was struggling in AP Calculus BC. Not only was he able to boost her grade to an A, she also scored a 5 on her AP exam for both Calculus AB and BC. Also, My son went to his SAT class over the summer and after every class he said how much he enjoyed Matt and was excited about what he learned. I will continue to give Matt the highest recommendation which is rare for me since I am a math teacher myself. He is excellent!

  • 5 star review  Mr. Groden came to our family's rescue not once...but twice. Both kids struggled in pre calc and we were fortunate to be put in touch with Mr. Groden. First Mr. Groden worked with my son in parallel pre calc and just recently he has helped my daughter in honors pre calc. Mr. Groden is able to really connect with his clients and explain math concepts in a way that my kids were able to understand. They both said "it clicked" and that's exactly what I wanted to hear. He took them from struggling to confident, with both kids ending out the course successfully (well...my daughter is nearing the end;).

  • 5 star review  After class with Mr. Groden, I felt more than prepared for my exams. In class, we had covered every type of problem we could expect to see and received ample explanation of its solution. On the day of the test, I was calm knowing Mr. Groden had prepared me well for any problem that could be on the exam. In addition to giving me confidence going into one of the most difficult exams I had taken, Mr. Groden gave me a deeper appreciation and understanding of mathematics. He gave me the ability to visualize complex concepts more than any other teach I had and problem solving techniques that I continue to use. Beyond being ready for my exams, I was ready to understand more difficult math in high school and college.

  • 5 star review  My daughter had a great experience in Mr. Groden's SAT prep class. We had been searching for an effective affordable option and this in person class was just the right choice!! Excellent follow up and communication of expectations each week prior to class helped the kids keep on track. It also helped me know what was covered and what was expected of her. Nice work! I highly recommend!

5 star review  Matt is amazing! Both of my children see him weekly and they love when he comes to tutor. He is extremely knowledgeable and has a different perspective on teaching math the the kids really get excited about. I don't think I have met anyone more enthusiastic about math, ever. It's inspiring for the kids to work with someone that truly loves teaching math!

5 star review  My daughter loved working with Matt through his Middle School Math Foundations course. She was apprehensive to take Math for fun over the summer alongside her other activities but absolutely loved Matts approach to teaching! She is sad to see it end but is looking forward to continuing with him throughout her education! Highly recommend Matt to all my friends and family out there!

  • 5 star review  While I've never been tutored by Mr. Groden, he was one of my absolute favorite teachers. He always put in the extra effort to explain concepts, and did so so well that many of his students could attest to the fact that even Calculus BC was understandable if you had Mr. Groden for your teacher. Besides that, he made every one of his 26 students in my class excited by Calculus, by sheer force of his constant energy and emphasis of what the concepts could do. Highly recommend for tutoring!

5 star review  I cannot say enough about Matt Groden. My son attended his AP Calc review course last summer. Mr. Goden's enthusiam for math was infectious to my son. He completed the course and had such a renewed excitement for math that I had not seen in quite a while. My son always loved math, but that love slightly diminished over the past two years. My son was now genuinly excited to start math class in September. As a bonus, currently he not only loves his course but he is doing great! Thank you Mr. Groden! You willingness to always go the extra mile and the kindness you exhibit towards your students is priceless.

  • 5 star review  My daughter was fortunate to have Mr. Groden for both AP Calc AB and BC and she rocked both classes and the AP exam. Now a college junior she's already sailed though Calc 4 and we attribute her success to the foundation she received from Mr. Groden. He loves teaching and motivating his students and that enthusiasm radiates through everything he does.

5 star review  Seriously a hero. I was struggling to pass the Praxis Core math section and he was great and fast with setting up a good time to meet and really helped me nail concepts that I needed. I highly recommend meeting with Matt if you feel yourself struggling in any area of math! Thank you again!

5 star review  Mr. Groden was definitely the best tutor I've ever had. He makes learning easy and enjoyable and he never makes you feel dumb for asking questions. He's an amazing person and an even more amazing tutor. I would definitely recommend him for anyone struggling with math.
