Chapter 5: Introduction to Graphs and Functions

This chapter gets under way with a lesson on how to graph and interpret real-world data. From there you will study patterns and sequences (including a study of arithmetic sequences). Then, it is off to understanding functions and function rules, which will contain the all-important lesson on domain, range, and the vertical line test! You will master how to create tables of data, function rules, and graphs given real-world word problems – super important! After interpreting and sketching graphs that describe real-world events or “stories”, you will conclude the chapter with understanding the difference between linear and non-linear functions. Ready? Set? Go start learning the foundations of functions!!!!

Matt helped my daughter prepare for a test last minute when another tutor canceled only a few hours before the session! You can tell Matt genuinely cares about the students success. We hope to enroll in one of his summer sessions and SAT prep courses. Thanks again, Matt!

  • My son thoroughly enjoyed taking Matt’s summer enrichment pre-calc class. He is a positive upbeat teacher who makes math fun! I would encourage any parent interested in keeping their child engaged in learning to register! He provided my child with renewed excitement in a subject for which he was losing enthusiasm. He had an amazing experience!

Matt Groden is by far the best math instructor around!!! He has a passion for math and it shows through his ability to break down any math problem, no matter how complicated, into a simple form the student can understand. He is kind, easy going and most importantly, he truly cares about his students.

  • My son was struggling in Calculus. He lost all confidence and felt there was no way he could pass his class. With Matt's help my son started understanding his work and gained confidence. Matt made learning exciting and fun. We owe so much to Matt's amazing ability to do whatever it takes to help his students. There is no one better than Matt!

  • While I've never been tutored by Mr. Groden, he was one of my absolute favorite teachers. He always put in the extra effort to explain concepts, and did so so well that many of his students could attest to the fact that even Calculus BC was understandable if you had Mr. Groden for your teacher. Besides that, he made every one of his 26 students in my class excited by Calculus, by sheer force of his constant energy and emphasis of what the concepts could do. Highly recommend for tutoring!

Mr. Groden really helped me learn the subject of geometry very well. He related certain topics to the interest of the student which helped a lot. The pointers he gave for study habits were definitely very helpful and I would recommend Mr. Groden to anybody.

positive review  Matt truly cares about each student. My son took his SAT prep course and his math section increased 90 points. There was great communication after each course session as the teachers would email what was covered, what to do next, and an overview of future class. He was always there to answer any question my son ( and I) had.

  • Matt’s excitement for learning boosted my sons confidence. He showed him ways to solve problems and feel confident. That in itself is amazing. I highly recommend Matt. No doubt your child’s grade or SATs will soar.

I cannot say enough about Matt Groden. My son attended his AP Calc review course last summer. Mr. Goden's enthusiam for math was infectious to my son. He completed the course and had such a renewed excitement for math that I had not seen in quite a while. My son always loved math, but that love slightly diminished over the past two years. My son was now genuinly excited to start math class in September. As a bonus, currently he not only loves his course but he is doing great! Thank you Mr. Groden! You willingness to always go the extra mile and the kindness you exhibit towards your students is priceless.

  • I took a Calc. 2 class at BCCC this semester and we missed 3 weeks of class due to snow, meaning my professor had to condence the material and breeze by a lot of important concepts. If it hadn't been for Matt there is no way I would've passed the course. He presented everything in a clear, comprehensive, and easy to understand way that I've never really experienced before and I did really well because of it. He took the time to explain everything, answered all of my questions and made sure that I was keeping up with him every step of the. He's a genuine guy who really wants you to learn and enjoys teaching. I highly recommend him for anyone who is struggling with their course work, you'll never make a better investment.

Matt is amazing! Both of my children see him weekly and they love when he comes to tutor. He is extremely knowledgeable and has a different perspective on teaching math the the kids really get excited about. I don't think I have met anyone more enthusiastic about math, ever. It's inspiring for the kids to work with someone that truly loves teaching math!

  • After class with Mr. Groden, I felt more than prepared for my exams. In class, we had covered every type of problem we could expect to see and received ample explanation of its solution. On the day of the test, I was calm knowing Mr. Groden had prepared me well for any problem that could be on the exam. In addition to giving me confidence going into one of the most difficult exams I had taken, Mr. Groden gave me a deeper appreciation and understanding of mathematics. He gave me the ability to visualize complex concepts more than any other teach I had and problem solving techniques that I continue to use. Beyond being ready for my exams, I was ready to understand more difficult math in high school and college.

My son had Mr. Groden as a teacher at PHS and my daughter attending Summer AP Calc Prep. Matt does the unthinkable, he makes Calc fun for his students and they are not afraid to make mistakes or ask for help. My daughter feels more confident having attended "math camp". Thank you!

  • positive review  My youngest son took the Algebra 1 course to keep up his skills during summer and loved it. My oldest son had Matt for AP Calculus a few years ago and loved it. Matt Groden is a fun, patient, pleasant, very effective teacher who shows your child how to understand and love math, not dread it!

positive review  Matt does a fantastic job of helping the students understand how to apply formulas and why they work! He never just has the students memorize formulas. My son really liked his approach and it helped that he made videos to refer to when he needed a refresher during the week. I would highly recommend his courses!

  • I think it is clear to anyone who has worked with Mr. Groden that he has a very special ability to empower and inspire the youth, and to teach in ways that resonate for all. His patience, compassion, flexibility, and incredibly thorough understanding of the math combine to help students realize our greatest potential -- sometimes potential that we didn’t even know was there until he helped us find it. In addition to being an amazing teacher, he is a great role model and friend to anyone he meets. So easy to talk to, so caring, so kind -- the most genuine person. I would be doing a disservice to the community if I did not spread the world about the incredible opportunity to learn with him. 5million stars

I was lucky enough to have Mr. Groden as my teacher for two classes throughout high school. In school, math was never my strong suite but Mr. Groden was able to use real life examples that pertained to myself that helped me with understanding the math. After a couple of years, I started attending Rider University where I studied Business. I hadn't been in a math class in years so when I found out that I had to take Quantitative Methods for Business, I knew that I was in trouble. After receiving my first test and seeing that I received a low C, I reached out to Mr. Groden to see if he were doing any tutoring and surly enough he was. Mr. Groden met with me once a week and again was able to use real life examples that pertained to myself and I was able to understand the math. I ended the semester receiving an A in the class, and I know 100% I would not have reached that without Mr. Grodens help. Thank you!
