Chapter 5: Introduction to Graphs and Functions

This chapter gets under way with a lesson on how to graph and interpret real-world data. From there you will study patterns and sequences (including a study of arithmetic sequences). Then, it is off to understanding functions and function rules, which will contain the all-important lesson on domain, range, and the vertical line test! You will master how to create tables of data, function rules, and graphs given real-world word problems – super important! After interpreting and sketching graphs that describe real-world events or “stories”, you will conclude the chapter with understanding the difference between linear and non-linear functions. Ready? Set? Go start learning the foundations of functions!!!!

  • 5 star review  Mr. Groden is passionate about teaching and leading his student to success. My son took his SAT prep course and he had nothing but praise for Mr. Groden. Not only is he a great teacher, but his students like and respect him and therefore are eager to learn. Every time I picked my son up from the class he had something positive to say. I would recommend Mr. Groden's tutoring or SAT Prep to anyone looking for real results from an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher.

positive review  I can't say enough good things about Mr. Groden! He has helped my son so much. My son fights working with tutors but Mr. Groden did an excellent job pairing with my son and making him feel comfortable with him. He really understands the areas that my son struggles with and helps him in those areas while at the same time giving my son positive feedback and encouraging him. It gives me peace of mind knowing that with Mr. Groden's help my son will do well and grow and learn and be successful in his math classes!

  • 5 star review  My son took the SAT prep class. It was a great class with fantastic instruction strategies and top notch teachers who clearly know their stuff. They made the class fun and motivated my son to do the required out-of-class practice. His scores on the practice tests consistently improved. We would absolutely recommend this class!

positive review  Matt does a fantastic job of helping the students understand how to apply formulas and why they work! He never just has the students memorize formulas. My son really liked his approach and it helped that he made videos to refer to when he needed a refresher during the week. I would highly recommend his courses!

5 star review  Matt helped my daughter prepare for a test last minute when another tutor canceled only a few hours before the session! You can tell Matt genuinely cares about the students success. We hope to enroll in one of his summer sessions and SAT prep courses. Thanks again, Matt!

5 star review  Because he was in this class, my son spent more time doing SAT practice tests this summer than he otherwise would have. I didn't have to "nag" him to do practice tests...so, I appreciate that! He ended up knowing alot of the kids in the class, so he enjoyed it. It was also nice to do this in the summer when his schedule was less-busy. The teachers are high energy, well-respected and admired by the kids.

  • 5 star review  Matt is amazing! Both of my children see him weekly and they love when he comes to tutor. He is extremely knowledgeable and has a different perspective on teaching math the the kids really get excited about. I don't think I have met anyone more enthusiastic about math, ever. It's inspiring for the kids to work with someone that truly loves teaching math!

positive review  My youngest son took the Algebra 1 course to keep up his skills during summer and loved it. My oldest son had Matt for AP Calculus a few years ago and loved it. Matt Groden is a fun, patient, pleasant, very effective teacher who shows your child how to understand and love math, not dread it!

  • positive review  I had Matt Groden for AP Calculus and I have to say, he was and probably will be the greatest teacher I ever had. Not only was he exceptional in terms of his teaching ability and breadth of knowledge, but it is his care for learning was what made him unique. This was the first teacher in a long time that I can remember who valued learning and discovery over just memorizing and ‘teaching to the test’. His ability to make students excited to learn new math material is what makes Matt so perfectly suited for this. Anyone with the chance to learn math with him should most definitely take this opportunity - you will not be disappointed!!

5 star review  My son was struggling in Calculus. He lost all confidence and felt there was no way he could pass his class. With Matt's help my son started understanding his work and gained confidence. Matt made learning exciting and fun. We owe so much to Matt's amazing ability to do whatever it takes to help his students. There is no one better than Matt!

  • 5 star review  Mr Groden has the ability to make calculus (and math in general) fun, meaningful, relevant, etc. and to relate complex concepts in a way that not only makes sense, but also gives the students the ability to re-apply the concepts later on. Our son had Mr. Groden as his calculus teacher in high school, and our daughter has now used Mr. Groden's services for both SAT prep and AB Calculus weekly review. Both have been excellent and more than worth the money spent.

5 star review  Matt Groden was a fantastic SAT tutor for my boys. They were very reluctant to have help, but he was able to immediately win them over because of both his knowledge and confidence. The test-taking skills they learned from him definitely helped them approach the test calmly and with confidence, and their scores reflected that. I would absolutely recommend Matt to help your child with math or SAT prep. He clearly loves teaching math and knows how to do so!

  • 5 star review  My daughter had a great experience in Mr. Groden's SAT prep class. We had been searching for an effective affordable option and this in person class was just the right choice!! Excellent follow up and communication of expectations each week prior to class helped the kids keep on track. It also helped me know what was covered and what was expected of her. Nice work! I highly recommend!

He has a way of explaining and teaching math that kept my son excited and energized to learn more. My son did extremely well on his SATs and was strong in Calculus, all thanks to Matt and his care for his students. If you are need for math help for your child, look no further!

  • 5 star review  Matt Groden is the best teacher, academic or otherwise, I've had the privilege of studying under. His passion and dedication to his craft as an educator allow him to take difficult subjects and make them somehow enjoyable. He challenges his students to rise to meet their challenge, and invests personally in their success. He possesses a unique gift to help students visualize and understand mathematical concepts and problems, in addition to the patience and commitment to make sure his students are prepared for what's coming their way. His lessons have impacted my college career in more ways than one, and I'm grateful. If you're looking for a math tutor, there's none better.

5 star review  Matt - is an amazing teacher - his method of communication in order to ensure a complete understanding of the concepts was clearly reflected in my son's test scores once he started working with Matt - it was instantaneous. We were blessed to get terrific recommendations for Matt and he jumped in and my son loved working with Matt. I would recommend him to anyone and hope to continue to work with him remotely for college calc.
