Chapter 12: Radicals and An Introduction to Trigonometry

This lively chapter begins with a lesson on simplifying square roots of whole numbers that are not perfect squares. From there you will handle how to simplify square roots involving variables raised to powers before learning to multiply radicals. Next stop involves mastering dividing square roots, which includes rationalizing the denominator. Then it is off to adding, subtracting, and using the distributive property with square roots. The next portion of the chapter takes you on a tour of the Pythagorean Theorem and Special Right Triangles.  The chapter finishes with gusto as you learn about Trigonometry and how to apply it to real-world word problems. This is a truly powerful chapter full of exciting stuff connecting you to future courses of math studies! Time to rock it!

  • 5 star review  Matt has helped my son immensely in preparing both for the SATs and the AP Calculus BC exam. He has a way of explaining and teaching math that kept my son excited and energized to learn more. My son did extremely well on his SATs and was strong in Calculus, all thanks to Matt and his care for his students. If you are need for math help for your child, look no further!

positive review  Matt truly cares about each student. My son took his SAT prep course and his math section increased 90 points. There was great communication after each course session as the teachers would email what was covered, what to do next, and an overview of future class. He was always there to answer any question my son ( and I) had.

  • 5 star review  Matt Groden is the best teacher, academic or otherwise, I've had the privilege of studying under. His passion and dedication to his craft as an educator allow him to take difficult subjects and make them somehow enjoyable. He challenges his students to rise to meet their challenge, and invests personally in their success. He possesses a unique gift to help students visualize and understand mathematical concepts and problems, in addition to the patience and commitment to make sure his students are prepared for what's coming their way. His lessons have impacted my college career in more ways than one, and I'm grateful. If you're looking for a math tutor, there's none better.

5 star review  My son had Mr. Groden as a teacher at PHS and my daughter attending Summer AP Calc Prep. Matt does the unthinkable, he makes Calc fun for his students and they are not afraid to make mistakes or ask for help. My daughter feels more confident having attended "math camp". Thank you!

  • positive review  I can't say enough good things about Mr. Groden! He has helped my son so much. My son fights working with tutors but Mr. Groden did an excellent job pairing with my son and making him feel comfortable with him. He really understands the areas that my son struggles with and helps him in those areas while at the same time giving my son positive feedback and encouraging him. It gives me peace of mind knowing that with Mr. Groden's help my son will do well and grow and learn and be successful in his math classes!

  • positive review  It was like divine intervention when my son ASKED me (I know right??) if he could take a class leading up to honors Algebra 2 in the Fall. That same day I came across Matt’s summer offerings. Matt was the perfect teacher - engaging, passionate and fun - and my son really enjoyed taking his class (ENJOYED math in the summer? I know right?). THANK YOU MATT!! He’s ready 👍

5 star review  My daughter was fortunate to have Mr. Groden for both AP Calc AB and BC and she rocked both classes and the AP exam. Now a college junior she's already sailed though Calc 4 and we attribute her success to the foundation she received from Mr. Groden. He loves teaching and motivating his students and that enthusiasm radiates through everything he does.

  • positive review  I had Matt Groden for AP Calculus and I have to say, he was and probably will be the greatest teacher I ever had. Not only was he exceptional in terms of his teaching ability and breadth of knowledge, but it is his care for learning was what made him unique. This was the first teacher in a long time that I can remember who valued learning and discovery over just memorizing and ‘teaching to the test’. His ability to make students excited to learn new math material is what makes Matt so perfectly suited for this. Anyone with the chance to learn math with him should most definitely take this opportunity - you will not be disappointed!!

5 star review  Matt Groden is by far the best math instructor around!!! He has a passion for math and it shows through his ability to break down any math problem, no matter how complicated, into a simple form the student can understand. He is kind, easy going and most importantly, he truly cares about his students.

  • 5 star review  After class with Mr. Groden, I felt more than prepared for my exams. In class, we had covered every type of problem we could expect to see and received ample explanation of its solution. On the day of the test, I was calm knowing Mr. Groden had prepared me well for any problem that could be on the exam. In addition to giving me confidence going into one of the most difficult exams I had taken, Mr. Groden gave me a deeper appreciation and understanding of mathematics. He gave me the ability to visualize complex concepts more than any other teach I had and problem solving techniques that I continue to use. Beyond being ready for my exams, I was ready to understand more difficult math in high school and college.

5 star review  Mr Groden has the ability to make calculus (and math in general) fun, meaningful, relevant, etc. and to relate complex concepts in a way that not only makes sense, but also gives the students the ability to re-apply the concepts later on. Our son had Mr. Groden as his calculus teacher in high school, and our daughter has now used Mr. Groden's services for both SAT prep and AB Calculus weekly review. Both have been excellent and more than worth the money spent.

  • 5 star review  Matt cannot be more highly recommended as a math tutor or teacher. His ability to explain difficult concepts in an easy to understand fashion is phenomenal. The enthusiasm he displays is contagious and allows the student to become more actively engaged. He always tries to relate the topics to areas of interest and works hard to make a personal connection.

5 star review  While I've never been tutored by Mr. Groden, he was one of my absolute favorite teachers. He always put in the extra effort to explain concepts, and did so so well that many of his students could attest to the fact that even Calculus BC was understandable if you had Mr. Groden for your teacher. Besides that, he made every one of his 26 students in my class excited by Calculus, by sheer force of his constant energy and emphasis of what the concepts could do. Highly recommend for tutoring!

  • 5 star review  My daughter (who usually gets straight A's) was struggling in Pre-Calculus with a D+ current grade. After tutoring with Mr. Grodan, she got an A on her final and ended up passing the class with a B. I recommend his services to anyone who is struggling with math.

5 star review  My daughter loved working with Matt through his Middle School Math Foundations course. She was apprehensive to take Math for fun over the summer alongside her other activities but absolutely loved Matts approach to teaching! She is sad to see it end but is looking forward to continuing with him throughout her education! Highly recommend Matt to all my friends and family out there!
